A new 20 MW facility in Chennai marks the country’s largest deployment of AMD Instinct GPUs to date.
Privately held cloud provider Vultr has announced a major expansion of its infrastructure in Chennai, India, partnering with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to power enterprise and sovereign cloud initiatives. The new 20 MW supercluster will feature AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs, establishing India’s largest AMD Instinct deployment. Alongside its flagship facility in Springfield, Ohio, this move gives Vultr two of the world’s largest AMD AI infrastructure sites.
Equipped with 288GB of HBM3E memory and 8TBps of memory bandwidth per processor, the MI355X GPUs offer high memory capacity and compute performance. Designed to support AI labs, foundation model creators, startups, enterprises, and research institutions, the facility will handle demanding workloads ranging from large language model training and fine-tuning to high-throughput inference.
JJ Kardwell, CEO of Vultr, highlighted that scaling AI operations requires local infrastructure to satisfy strict data sovereignty, residency, and latency demands. He noted that the new deployment provides Indian organisations with dedicated compute capacity to train and deploy AI models domestically.
The deployment builds on Vultr’s ongoing collaboration with AMD, which spans its GPU roadmap—from the MI300X and MI325X to the MI355X and upcoming MI455X—alongside AMD EPYC server processors.
Developers using the Chennai supercluster will also have access to the AMD ROCm open software ecosystem, enabling them to work with popular open-source AI frameworks and libraries. Jaya Jagadish, Country Head and Senior Vice President of Engineering at AMD India, emphasised that providing compute power at this scale will help local talent translate ideas into reality, while offering researchers and enterprises greater flexibility in AI development.
The initiative aligns with a growing global demand for sovereign cloud capacity driven by data security concerns, regulatory compliance, and performance needs. Vultr currently operates 34 cloud data centre regions across 17 countries.
