Never in the history of Greenpeace’s green gadget guide has an Indian electronics firm surpassed US giants like Apple and HP. Wipro has taken lead in the rankings, going ahead of American tech companies like Apple, HP and Dell. This was shared by Greenpeace, which had released its latest (18th) Guide to Greener Electronics and announced that Wipro lead the sustainability ranking charts out of 16 companies.
The guide was introduced in 2006 by Greenpeace. The guide looks at the overall environmental functioning of electronics manufacturers checking whether they use toxic materials in their gadgets, take back old products for recycling, amount of energy produced and how clean their energy sources are.
Companies are also marked for charting out carbon emission reduction goals. The top rack of the list comprises Wipro, HP, Nokia, and Acer, while the bottom list includes Sharp, Toshiba and RIM.
Wipro’s recognition highlights the importance of the company’s “climate leadership,” says Greenpeace. The Indian company is further looking to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 44 per cent by 2015 and achieve 85 per cent of those emissions reductions through the use of clean power.
“While Wipro is willing to be aggressive on clean power and greenhouse gas emissions reductions goals, the Greenpeace rankings find that in contrast almost all of the other electronics giants are still heavily dependent on climate changing dirty energy sources in their supply and manufacturing chains,” Greenpeace said.
