TSMC Arizona Unit Starts Producing Apple’s Latest A16 SoC Using 5-nm Process

Apple A16 chips with 5nm process produced in TSMC Arizona plant are likely to be used in upcoming iPads, and the next generation iPhone SE.

TSMC’s new chip unit in Arizona state has reportedly commenced producing Apple’s latest A16 chipset utilizing the 5nm process. TSMC, equipped with the world;’s largest chip foundry, would escalate the production volume when the second stage of phase 1 of the FAB is completed. The chip manufacturer is undertaking strenuous efforts to meet the production target by the first half of 2025.

Speaking about the Cupertino Tech Giant, it became the first company whose chips will be produced with the latest 5 nm process. The A16 processor was designed by Apple a couple of years ago when it was unveiled with the iPhone 14 Pro. Tim Culpan, reporter at Substack, said that fab 21 of TSMC is producing the chips on a smaller scale. According to the sources of Culpan, N4P Process are being deployed while producing the A16 chips, the same process done in Taiwan.

The N4P process is a refined manufacturing process for chips from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). It’s a performance-focused enhancement of TSMC’s 5-nanometer technology platform. As per the company N4P is just the upgraded version of 5nm process and people can call it 4nm too.

The TSMC Arizona plant is one of the most imperative projects by the US government signed in accordance with the US CHIPS Act. The $65B investment in three fabs will create 6000 high-tech, high-wage jobs, and the company’s suppliers will bring tens of thousands more employment opportunities in construction and supplier jobs.

Initially, it was anticipated that Apple would approach TSMC in Arizona for the H series SoC, which are used in AirPods. But, surprisingly, it approached the chip-maker for A16 chips.Currently, TSMC Arizona plant is yet to be equipped with loads of cutting-edge technology and equipment and therefore, it is slightly difficult for them to enjoy its position like in Taiwan.
