The space research organization is making significant strides in creating indigenous car sensors to empower the automotive industry.
At the Bangalore Tech Summit on November 20, 2024, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) Chairman S Somanath pointed out the paradox of India’s capability to produce top-tier sensors for its rocket programs while the automotive sector continues to rely on foreign imports for critical sensor systems. It’s time to bridge this gap and unleash the potential of homegrown technology in our vehicles. According to the chairman, ISRO is making significant strides in creating indigenous car sensors to empower the automotive industry and reduce its dependence on imported components.
He stressed the importance of collaboration between ISRO and the automotive industry to create these sensors locally, aiming for lower costs and increased production volumes. The pandemic revealed significant vulnerabilities in supply chains, particularly in the availability of sensors, leading to major disruptions in automobile production. This situation has reinforced the urgency of establishing a robust domestic manufacturing capability for sensors to ensure stability and self-sufficiency in the automotive industry.
To support this initiative, ISRO plans to organize workshops that will convene industry stakeholders and experts from the space sector. The objective is to encourage dialogue and collaboration to propel the development of sensor technology in the nation. Discussions at the summit also touched on recent policy reforms by the government designed to boost private sector involvement in space technology, which could positively impact the automotive industry. The Karnataka Space Tech Policy aims to position the state as a frontrunner in space technologies, potentially benefiting local automotive manufacturers significantly.
A representative from the automation sector, collaborating closely with the government, stated, “This is a promising initiative. It will significantly enhance the automobile and technology sectors, in which Karnataka is making remarkable advancements.”
