KSRTC To Set-up Numerous EV Charging Stations Across The State

‘Yatra Fuels’, the KSRTC’s direct fuel outlet chain, is not only boosting non-operative revenue but has also saved the entity Rs 215 crore in fuel expenses over the past two years.

The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is launching public charging stations for electric vehicles at its bus depots across the state, building on the success of the ‘Yatra Fuel’ initiative. This step embraces a sustainable future and enhances non-traffic revenue, making it a win-win for both the environment and the local economy.

By leveraging its existing infrastructure, KSRTC is creating an alternative revenue source. It is a strategic approach to improve its financial stability while contributing to green energy initiatives. This initiative will address the urgent need for Electric Vehicles Public Charging Stations (EVPCS) in Kerala, a leader in electric vehicle adoption, particularly for two-wheelers and passenger vehicles in FY 2024. With charging facilities at KSRTC bus stations in prime locations, EV owners can easily charge their vehicles.

A senior official at KSRTC announced plans to lease land to private operators to install EV charging stations using a ‘Build and Operate Model.’ In return, KSRTC will secure a fixed monthly rent of at least 500 units of electricity per charger. The initial phase will see the establishment of public charging stations at three bus stations: Munnar, Vithura, and Sultan Bathery.

The official emphasized that the department is making significant strides in locating ideal sites for EV charging stations at all 73 depots and 20 operating centers across the state. This strategic initiative includes the Ernakulam bus station, where renovations will soon commence, proudly supported by the MLA fund.

KSRTC will provide land at subsidized rates for private operators to establish a 24/7 charging facility. In exchange, the department will benefit from a revenue share based on the electricity used at the station. This facility must include at least one charging point and can operate with a total power limit of less than 100 KWH.

KSRTC has issued an Expression of Interest (EoI) for the design, installation, operation, maintenance, and management of fast charging stations for electric vehicles. This initiative aims to gather information on requirements, including preferred depots and the necessary land. Following the responses, a joint inspection with the bidders will be conducted at the designated depots to assess the feasibility. Two plots of land have been designated for charging stations, each featuring three bays at the bus stations. Proposals are due by December 12, and the contract will go to the highest bidder.
