Bengaluru-based startup CynLr, focused on Robotics and AI, has announced a research partnership with Indian Institute of Science.
The aim is to develop robotic vision systems that operate without pre-training or fixed programming, using real-time data to respond to changing physical environments. The partnership brings together CynLr’s experience in robotic systems with the IISc’s neuroscience research.
IISc will conduct studies on how the brain processes visual information such as motion, depth, and object continuity. CynLr will focus on building robotic systems that incorporate these mechanisms to function in dynamic environments.
Gokul N A, founder of CynLr said “This collaboration is designed to combine real-world complexity with robotic perception from first principles. We are here to build machines that do not just see but comprehend. Our work with IISc represents a deliberate investment into that vision.”
The company has previously worked with international research institutes in Switzerland, in developing robotic systems capable of generalised object handling, referred to as Object Intelligence. These systems are intended to manipulate unfamiliar objects across varied contexts without reconfiguration.
The project also supports ongoing efforts to develop components tailored for robotics, including machine vision hardware, edge computing systems, tactile sensors, and control algorithms. The ability to design such components in parallel with neuroscience-based models is expected to inform the development of perception systems suited for non-standardised environments.
CynLr has stated its intent to engage further research with IISc to study across areas such as neurobiology, robotics, optics, and human–computer interaction focused on biological vision operates and apply those findings to robotics.
The research project, titled Visual Neuroscience for Cybernetics, focuses on using insights from human visual processing to improve robotic perception and manipulation.
