Hyundai Reaffirms Tamil Nadu as Centrepiece of India EV Plans

With new EV models, deeper localisation and fresh investments planned, Hyundai is positioning Tamil Nadu as the hub of its India strategy.

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has reinforced its commitment to making Tamil Nadu its principal electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing base in India, outlining plans to introduce new EV models, deepen localisation and expand investments in the state over the coming years.

The announcement follows a meeting between Hyundai executives and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on June 4, 2026, during which the company reiterated its long-term partnership with the state government and its role in supporting the development of an EV manufacturing ecosystem.

HMIL Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Tarun Garg said the company will launch two new models from its manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur, including its first mass-market dedicated electric vehicle later this year. The move is expected to support broader EV adoption while strengthening domestic production capabilities.

The company said it has already established Tamil Nadu’s first battery sub-assembly plant for EV powertrains and is continuing efforts to localise power electronics and other critical EV components.

Hyundai also plans to raise localisation levels across both electric and internal combustion engine vehicle production from the current 82 per cent to 90 per cent within the next five to six years.

As part of these plans, the automaker intends to increase procurement from suppliers based in Tamil Nadu by around ₹40 billion. The initiative is expected to generate approximately 2,000 additional jobs in the state over the same period while reducing dependence on imported components.

Hyundai further stated that it remains committed to investing more than ₹260 billion in Tamil Nadu between 2023 and 2032, forming part of the company’s previously announced ₹450-billion investment programme in India.

Beyond manufacturing, the company and the Tamil Nadu government jointly announced a skill development initiative aimed at improving the employability of young people in advanced automotive technologies. The programme is scheduled to commence operations in December 2027.

Hyundai has also developed an EV charging network across Tamil Nadu comprising 39 DC fast-charging stations and 78 charging points. The company noted that more than 3.9 million vehicles manufactured in Tamil Nadu have been exported to over 150 countries, underscoring the state’s importance within its global production and export network.
