Mitsubishi Chemical explores semiconductor investment in West Bengal

West Bengal is competing with several states to attract semiconductor investments

Japan-based Mitsubishi Chemical Group is exploring investment opportunities in West Bengal’s semiconductor sector, with the company initiating discussions with the state government on setting up a semiconductor facility.

According to West Bengal Industries Minister Tapas Roy, senior representatives from the Japanese company met state officials at Nabanna to discuss potential investments. The delegation is expected to return in the fourth week of this month for further talks.

“Mitsubishi is keen to establish a semiconductor unit in the state,” Roy said, adding that attracting semiconductor investments is a key priority for the government.

The state had announced plans in its latest budget to develop a semiconductor manufacturing facility in Durgapur. Roy said Durgapur and Panagarh are the preferred locations for the proposed project, which would require relatively limited land.

Mitsubishi Chemical Group, which reported annual revenue of 3,704 billion yen (over $22 billion) in FY25, is a global supplier of advanced materials, specialty chemicals and industrial solutions. In the semiconductor industry, the company provides critical process materials and consumables used in wafer manufacturing, making it an important player in the global semiconductor supply chain.

The company has an established history in West Bengal. Its subsidiary, MCC PTA India Corp, commissioned a purified terephthalic acid (PTA) manufacturing plant in Haldia in 2000 before Mitsubishi exited the business by selling the company to The Chatterjee Group in 2016.

West Bengal is competing with several states to attract semiconductor investments. Mitsubishi Chemical’s delegation also met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier this week to discuss opportunities in Assam’s semiconductor and chemical engineering sectors.

Roy said the state is finalising its ₹50 billion investment promotion framework announced in the recent budget. The policy also includes measures to support global capability centres (GCCs), AI-focused data centres and a new startup policy expected within the next three months.

The state government aims to position West Bengal as a leading manufacturing and investment destination by 2030.
