Samsung Reportedly Eyes €1 Billion Investment in Mistral AI

Samsung is reportedly in talks to invest around €1 billion in French AI startup Mistral AI, as Europe seeks to strengthen its technology independence.

This is as part of a funding round that could value the company at approximately €20 billion (US$22.81 billion), the Financial Times reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The South Korean technology giant could invest hundreds of millions of euros in the round, with the total investment potentially reaching about €1 billion, according to the report. EQT’s Scaleup Europe Fund is also reportedly considering backing the fundraising.

The discussions come as Samsung expands its focus on emerging technologies. In April, the company said it would consider investments and acquisitions to accelerate the development and commercialisation of robotics, while partnering with local companies to advance technology development.

Samsung and Mistral AI have not commented on the reported investment, and the details could not be independently verified.

The potential deal follows Microsoft’s agreement to invest billions of dollars in Mistral AI’s computing infrastructure in Europe. The partnership is also expected to expand the distribution of Mistral’s AI technology through Microsoft’s cloud and software platforms.

Founded in France, Mistral AI has positioned itself as a European alternative to US technology giants and has become a key player in the region’s push for greater technological independence. The company also supplies technology to the French military.

Growing concerns over dependence on US-based AI companies have increased interest in European AI firms. Recent restrictions affecting access to advanced AI models developed by US companies have further highlighted the importance of technological sovereignty.

Mistral AI’s reported valuation, however, remains significantly lower than those of leading US AI companies such as Anthropic.
