Defying Skepticism, Ferrari’s All-Electric Car Auctions for a Record $40 Million

The sale of Ferrari NV’s first all electric car, Luce, for forty million dollars at a Sotheby’s auction broke the earlier record of Ferrari’s customized Daytona SP3, sold for $26 million last year.

Ferrari NV’s first all-electric car, Luce, became the most expensive car to be sold at a record forty million dollars, at a Sotheby’s charity auction on Monday, despite the criticism faced earlier.

The sale of Luce “tailor made” at Sotheby’s Monetary car week in California, broke the record of Ferrari’s customized Daytona SP3, which was sold for $26 million last year, according to the carmaker.

When Ferrari unveiled the Luce in May, priced at $636,356, it was met with harsh criticism leading to a drop in Ferrari’s share price. The criticism was centred on the fact that the new model strayed from marque’s traditional designs and lost part of the brand’s identity by having five seats.

“Tailor made” cars are one-of-a-kind vehicles customized to a buyer’s precise specifications. The EV marks a break from Ferrari’s heritage of combustion-engine sports vehicles.

The model was designed by Sir Jony Ive, former associate of Steve Jobs and the former head of Apple’s industrial design studio and a key figure behind the iPhone and iMac. The car combines more than 100 horsepower with four doors.

Sotheby said that all proceeds from the sale will be donated to Ferrari foundation’s education program.

Ferrari’s CEO, Benedetto Vigna said in May that the model was getting orders from old and new customers. “Ferrari Luce has nothing to do with electric cars you have seen from other players. You have to see it and drive it to understand that it wasn’t copied- not the interiors, not the exteriors, not the performance,” he added.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Pope Leo were invited to view the luxury brand’s new vehicle.
