Assam is exploring Japanese investment in semiconductors, electronics, renewable energy, tea and tourism as it seeks to deepen economic ties with Japan.
Assam is seeking to deepen economic ties with Japan by attracting investment across sectors including semiconductors, electronics manufacturing, renewable energy, tea and tourism.
The discussions took place during a meeting between Assam’s chief secretary and a Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) delegation led by deputy director Toshiaki Sato. Both sides explored opportunities for Japanese companies to invest in the state and develop technology and business partnerships.
Key areas discussed included semiconductor and electronics manufacturing, compressed biogas, pumped-storage renewable energy, logistics, defence and aerospace, along with tea and golf tourism.
Assam also highlighted opportunities in its premium tea industry, including the growing adoption of matcha production. The state sees Japanese participation as a potential avenue for technology transfer, investment and greater value addition across its tea ecosystem.
The government also promoted its proposed ‘Tea & Teeing’ tourism concept, which combines Assam’s tea estates with golf. The state has more than 18 golf courses located within tea gardens and plans to position these destinations on the international golf circuit.
The meeting further explored a potential state-to-state cooperation agreement between Assam and Japan’s Shizuoka Prefecture. Such a partnership could strengthen institutional ties and facilitate collaboration across areas of shared interest.
Assam also urged JETRO to continue connecting Japanese businesses with investment opportunities in the state, with the aim of converting discussions into long-term projects and partnerships.
