Microchip, Marelli Push Open-Standard Displays For SDVs

Microchip and Marelli have demonstrated an ASA Motion Link-based display connectivity solution that could reduce proprietary SerDes dependence, simplify automotive electronics, and widen supplier choice for SDVs.

Microchip Technology and Marelli have demonstrated an open-standard display connectivity solution for software-defined vehicles (SDVs), using ASA Motion Link (ASA-ML) to stream graphics and video from a vehicle’s central computer directly to automotive displays. The approach could simplify display architectures, reduce system costs, and give automakers greater sourcing flexibility.

Defined by the Automotive SerDes Alliance (ASA), ASA-ML enables secure, high-speed video and graphics transmission across products from multiple technology providers. It offers an alternative to proprietary video transmission technologies, potentially improving interoperability and supplier choice. Microchip, a founding ASA member, is extending its ASA-ML interoperability work from cameras to displays.

The demonstrator uses Microchip’s VS7000 ASA-ML chipset to process and transmit centrally generated content over a high-speed standardised link. Marelli configures and optimises the ASA-ML deserialiser to decode the streams directly at the display, supporting camera feeds, navigation maps, infotainment graphics, and vehicle control interfaces while simplifying display-side electronics.

“The transition to software-defined vehicles is driving demand for more open, flexible and scalable electronic architectures,” said Kelei Shen, President of Marelli’s Electronics Business.

“Open standards play a critical role in accelerating innovation by reducing dependency on proprietary technologies,” said Kevin So, Vice President of Microchip’s Communications Business Unit.

The solution supports data rates of up to 16 Gbps, link-layer authentication and encryption, lossless transmission, electromagnetic-noise immunity, and lower power consumption through TDD and simplified FEC. For automakers, open SerDes connectivity could reduce proprietary technology lock-in while supporting increasingly centralised and Ethernet-centric vehicle electronics architectures.
