Morphing Machines has taped out MuDRA-1, its first India-designed chip, taking its fabless semiconductor development from architecture to physical silicon.
Morphing Machines has unveiled MuDRA-1, its first taped-out chip, at SEMICON India 2026, marking a first-silicon milestone for the Indian fabless semiconductor company. Designed in India, the chip marks the transition from chip architecture and design to physical silicon after years of development.
Morphing Machines credits the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme, C-DAC, India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA), and Semiconductor Future Accelerator Lab Foundation (SFAL) for supporting the ecosystem behind the development. The company identifies the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) as where its journey began, while also acknowledging its investors, advisers and partners.
MuDRA-1 was showcased at SEMICON India, Booth H3122, Hall 2, held from 17–19 September 2026. Morphing Machines described first silicon as “the milestone every fabless startup stakes years on” and said, “It is the moment an idea becomes something you can hold.”
In a subsequent update, Deepak Shapeti, CEO/COO, Morphing Machines, said MuDRA-1 had returned from the fab, with packaging and bring-up next. He said the company plans to scale towards advanced nodes, larger systems and frontier AI inference, with its REDEFINE architecture developed in India using custom ISA extensions, an MLIR compiler and runtimes.
