Samsung Takes 2nm Yield Close To 60%

Samsung’s 2nm yield is nearing 60% as it focuses on power efficiency and thermal performance, with Tesla orders offering a potential route to more major foundry customers.

Samsung Electronics’ 2nm foundry yield has reportedly approached 60%, strengthening the commercial viability of its SF2 process as the company shifts engineering focus towards power efficiency, thermal performance, and production consistency.

According to industry sources cited by ChosunBiz, SF2 yield has risen from about 30% in mid-2025 to the 50% range in January 2026, around 55% in August, and nearly 60% now. Samsung is expected to supply 2nm chips to Tesla next year, using the engagement as a potential route to secure more major technology customers.

Samsung is also accelerating its second-generation 2nm process, SF2P, for mass production this year. It reportedly offers 12% higher performance, 25% lower power consumption, and 8% smaller chip area than SF2.

SF2 uses Gate-All-Around (GAA) architecture and powers the Exynos 2600, manufactured at Samsung’s S3 line in Hwaseong, South Korea. Samsung says its copper heat-spreader packaging reduces thermal resistance by 30%. However, overseas testing has reportedly found higher power consumption than Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon chips in equivalent workloads, putting greater emphasis on SF2P’s efficiency improvements.

Samsung’s challenge extends beyond process yield. TSMC held 72.5% of the global foundry market in Q2 2026, compared with Samsung Foundry’s 5.9%. TSMC’s 2nm capacity is reportedly booked through 2028, while Samsung’s foundry profitability remains linked to utilisation of its Taylor fab in Texas.

A semiconductor industry official said, “The approach to a 60% Production yield and the start of performance-per-watt improvement efforts are meaningful rebound signals,” while noting the market-share gap with TSMC remains substantial.
