E-Waste Fraud Exposes Haier, Godrej, and Blue Star

Indian tax authorities fault major appliance makers over fabricated e-waste recycling claims and improper tax credits.

Indian tax authorities have faulted major home appliance manufacturers Haier India, Godrej & Boyce, and Blue Star for relying on fabricated documents from a spurious vendor. A 550-page notice sent to the three firms details how they used fraudulent compliance certificates from a vendor, WEEE-PRO Resource Recovery Solutions, that performed no actual recycling work. Indian tax officials noted in the document that “the foundational activity of procurement, receipt and processing of e-waste itself is not established.”

The authorities accused the companies of improperly claiming input tax credits totalling $714,000  for unrendered e-waste processing. Haier allegedly claimed $367,900, Blue Star $186,600, and Godrej $159,700. Under Indian tax laws, false claims carry financial penalties of up to 100 per cent.

Investigators uncovered the fraud by scrutinising communications, vehicle logs, and compliance imagery. The notice highlighted that “photographic evidence was manipulated or fabricated and was used to falsely substantiate the alleged physical movement of e-waste.” In one instance, a photograph logged nearly 30 minutes after sunset inexplicably displayed bright daylight and pronounced shadows.

As the world’s third-largest producer of electronic waste, after China and the US, India processes around 78 per cent of discarded electronics through informal scrap dealers using hazardous methods. Since 2022, regulations have mandated that electronics manufacturers meet statutory recycling targets, though most fulfill these obligations by purchasing compliance credits from third-party recyclers.

Godrej & Boyce and Blue Star stated they were committed to legal compliance and would respond to the notice, noting the vendor held official government authorisation. Blue Star added that it had severed ties with the firm, while Haier India affirmed its commitment to full cooperation. The case has prompted internal supply chain reviews across India’s $95-billion consumer electronics sector, with tax officials expanding scrutiny across the wider market.
