Union Minister Jitin Prasada said the Centre may consider electronics and semiconductor hubs in West Bengal, citing the state’s skilled design talent and potential for industrial investment.
The Centre may consider establishing electronics and semiconductor hubs in West Bengal, with Union Minister of State for Commerce, Industry, Electronics and IT Jitin Prasada highlighting the state’s skilled workforce for electronic component and semiconductor design.
Prasada said the Centre is also working with the state towards modern, plug-and-play industrial infrastructure, which could support businesses setting up operations in the state. He said the initiatives aim to remove infrastructure-related roadblocks and help revive West Bengal’s industrial potential.
“Under these initiatives, the government will make necessary infrastructure available so that businesses face no roadblocks and can start operations seamlessly to bring back Bengal’s golden era,”
The minister also urged global investors to look beyond India as a consumer market and pursue joint ventures and direct collaborations with Indian startups and domestic industries.
West Bengal’s existing industrial base and position as a regional logistics hub, supported by port connectivity, were also highlighted. Prasada pointed to established sectors including steel, textiles, chemicals and manufacturing as additional advantages.
He said India’s recent FTAs have opened duty-free market access for domestic enterprises across 65% to 75% of the developed world, creating opportunities for businesses in the state.
“Trade and technology are the two engines propelling India’s growth story. While the developed world brings technical expertise, India offers unprecedented scale, market size, and talent,”
The proposed electronics and semiconductor hubs remain under consideration; no specific project approval, investment commitment or location has been announced.
