Semiconductor supplier acquires radiation-hardening specialist to strengthen its aerospace and defence capabilities.
Semiconductor supplier Microchip Technology Incorporated has acquired Austin-based VORAGO Technologies, a specialist developer of radiation-hardened microcontrollers and microprocessors. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed, and Microchip expects the deal to have a neutral effect on its consolidated financial performance.
The acquisition adds VORAGO’s radiation-tolerant microcontrollers (MCUs) and microprocessors (MPUs) to Microchip’s aerospace and defence portfolio. The deal also includes VORAGO’s patented HARDSIL® technology, which enhances radiation tolerance in semiconductors and accelerates design times for extreme-environment applications without requiring complete product redesigns.
VORAGO’s components are engineered to withstand severe radiation exposure and operating temperatures up to 200°C, making them suitable for critical space, defence, and industrial deployments where standard silicon components would fail.
Steve Sanghi, Chief Executive and President of Microchip, stated that the acquisition enhances the company’s ability to support development across complex operating environments from terrestrial defence systems to space platforms. Bernd Lienhard, Chief Executive Officer of VORAGO Technologies, noted that joining Microchip provides the scale, broader capabilities, and resources necessary to serve the expanding space market.
Headquartered in Chandler, Arizona, Microchip provides semiconductor solutions across the industrial, automotive, aerospace, defence, communications, and computing sectors. VORAGO, founded in 2004, designs extreme-temperature and radiation-protected semiconductors and licenses its proprietary technology.
