Wednesday, January 22, 2014: The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has plans to install about 1,100 LED lights in wards dominated by backward class people. The proposal will be put forth at the general body meeting to be held recently. A budget of Rs 50 million allotted for the backward class is going to be used for this purpose.
According to a Times Of India report, the TMC is going to install over 5,000 LED lights across the city. It will consume up to 50 percent, of which 1,000 have already been installed. Lamps all over the city are in the process of illuminating the city streets with LED lights.
A TMC official stated that LEDs not only save power, but have a long life in comparison to the conventional sodium vapour or metal halide lamps. LED lights can be utilized for 75,000 hours, in comparison to the 17,000 hours of sodium vapour that will reduce the maintenance cost due to durability. Also, the sodium vapour lamps have 20mg of hazardous metal like mercury, said a TMC source. The LED is freed of mercury according to a TMC source and protecting the nature. The officer added that they had observed a great deal of change and drastic power saving while the LED lights were installed in the first phase. The TMC has installed 310 LED lights around Thane station and 300 in remaining parts of the city, hence managing to save 353 units of electricity.
The exercise has been executed with the help of many other stakeholders that include TMC, Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA) – functioning as ‘State Designate Agency (SDA) of BEE for Maharashtra and some of the NGOs.
