The transportation industry is in a transformation mode. From lower emissions to transport decarbonization reasons are aplenty. Indian Automotive industry has already set its course towards the sustainable alternative i.e., e-mobility. To stay on track EV components will play a vital role in ensuring safety, reliability, and performance.

A brief overview of rapid adoption of e-mobility

India experienced a three-fold increase in the sale of EVs in the year 2022, as the registration jumped to 10.20 lakhs from 3.29 lakhs in 2021. As we reach the midway point of CY2023, the cumulative EV retail figures have already reached an impressive 73% of CY2022. Notably, while two and three-wheelers remain the primary drivers of this growth, the sales of electric cars have surpassed the total sales recorded throughout the entirety of 2022.

The rise of e-mobility can be attributed to several key factors. First, growing concerns over environmental sustainability and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions have pushed governments and consumers alike towards cleaner transportation solutions. Second, advancements in battery technology have significantly improved the performance and range of EVs, making them a viable option for daily commuting and long-distance travel. Furthermore, the lower ownership cost of EVs in the long term and the establishment of a robust charging infrastructure have further accelerated their adoption.

e-mobility disrupting the transportation industry

e-Mobility is causing a major disruption in the transportation industry, affecting various sectors and stakeholders. One of the most significant impacts is felt by the automotive industry, where traditional automakers are compelled to invest heavily in EV development to stay competitive. This disruption has also given rise to new players, such as electric vehicle startups and tech companies, entering the market with innovative EV models and mobility solutions.

The disruption extends beyond vehicle manufacturing, affecting the entire transportation ecosystem. The need for charging infrastructure has created opportunities for companies specializing in electric charging stations and energy management systems. Additionally, e-mobility has opened avenues for collaboration between automakers and renewable energy providers, enabling the integration of EVs with renewable power sources.

Components – an integral part in e-mobility disruption

Just like an engine can only function well if its parts are reliable, and fail-safe; e-mobility can only be successful if the components are of best quality, delivers top performance, and are advanced. EV-OEMs today, need to invest in high-quality components such as batteries, electric motors, electronic components such as Relay (or Contactors), Capacitors, RF modules, Connectors, Resistors, Thermal Protection to name a few, for several reasons. First, these components are designed to withstand the demanding conditions of electric vehicle usage, ensuring performance and durability. Second, substandard components increase the risk of electrical hazards and accidents. Third, using high-quality components aligns with the sustainability goals of e-mobility, including the use of recycled materials and minimizing energy consumption. While the upfront cost may turn out to be higher in the short-term, in the long-term quality components offer long-term cost savings through reduced repairs, maintenance, and improved energy efficiencies. This not only is beneficial to the end-consumer but, the industry at-large.

For instance, advanced PhotosMos Relays integrated with MOSFET Technology provide efficient and reliable switching capabilities, particularly in battery monitoring systems. They enable precise control and monitoring of battery performance, enhancing overall efficiency and extending battery life. The Electromechanical Relays with hydrogen encapsulation offer high reliability, and safety ensuring consistent performance in demanding EV applications. Hybrid capacitors, on the other hand, offer high current capacity, making them an excellent option for motor controller designs. With their compact size and high energy storage capabilities, they provide an attractive value proposition in terms of both performance and cost-effectiveness.

Going forward, the industry should imperatively prioritize high-quality components. The continuous innovation and development of these components are essential to overcome existing limitations such as range anxiety, charging times, and upfront costs. Collaboration between OEMs, technology companies, and research institutions will be crucial in accelerating advancements in the sector, ultimately leading to more affordable, efficient, and sustainable e-mobility solutions.
