Crossing the US$5 billion mark for the month, India’s electronics exports continued their upward climb, reinforcing the sector’s growing role in trade.
India’s electronic goods exports rose 11.62 per cent year-on-year in May 2026 to reach US$5.10 billion, underscoring the sector’s increasing contribution to the country’s export performance amid continued demand from global markets.
According to trade data released by the government, electronics exports increased from US$4.57 billion in May 2025. The sector was among the key contributors to merchandise export growth during the month, alongside petroleum products, engineering goods, organic and inorganic chemicals, and gems and jewellery.
Meanwhile, India’s total merchandise exports in May 2026 stood at US$45.20 billion, compared with US$38.30 billion a year earlier. When services are included, total exports are estimated at US$81.96 billion, representing growth of 15.83 per cent over May 2025. Total imports during the month were estimated at US$92.47 billion, resulting in an overall trade deficit of US$10.51 billion.

For the first two months of the 2026-27 financial year, cumulative exports of goods and services reached an estimated US$162.69 billion, up 14.66 per cent from US$141.89 billion in the corresponding period of the previous year. Merchandise exports during April-May 2026-27 rose 16.09 per cent to US$88.91 billion.
Non-petroleum exports, often viewed as a broader indicator of manufacturing activity, increased 10.49 per cent during April-May to US$70.74 billion. Non-petroleum and non-gems-and-jewellery exports rose to US$65.89 billion from US$59.15 billion a year earlier.
Among major export categories in May, petroleum products recorded the strongest growth, rising 54.89 per cent to US$8.42 billion. Engineering goods exports increased 24.48 per cent to US$12.31 billion, while organic and inorganic chemicals grew 12.71 per cent to US$2.72 billion. Gems and jewellery exports rose 6.66 per cent to US$2.53 billion.
The government attributed the growth in electronics exports to expanding domestic manufacturing capabilities and increasing innovation-led production, positioning the sector as an increasingly important component of India’s export basket. Services exports during April-May 2026-27 are estimated to have grown 12.99 per cent year-on-year to US$73.79 billion.
