With HP, Lenovo, and Acer topping the market, India’s PC market grew 3.8 per cent YoY in 2024, driven by gaming, AI-powered PCs, and strong commercial demand.

The Indian traditional PC market, comprising desktops, notebooks, and workstations, saw a 3.8 per cent year-over-year (YoY) increase in shipments in 2024, reaching 14.4 million units.

According to the data reported by the International Data Corporation (IDC), notebooks and desktops saw growth of 4.5 per cent and 1.8 per cent YoY, respectively, while workstations posted the highest increase at 10.9 per cent.

Furthermore, in the last quarter of 2024 (4Q24), the overall market grew by 6.9 per cent YoY, driven by a 9.6 per cent YoY rise in notebook shipments. Premium notebooks (priced over US$1,000) saw a notable 13.8 per cent YoY growth in 2024.

“The consumer PC market has been on an upward trajectory, driven by gaming and AI-powered PCs. Gaming notebooks have seen double-digit growth in FY2024, and AI-powered notebooks, particularly those with Intel Core Ultra processors and AMD Ryzen AI processors, have gained significant traction since mid-2024,” noted Bharath Shenoy, research manager at IDC India & South Asia.

The consumer segment grew by 2.6 per cent YoY in 2024 and 2.2 per cent YoY in 4Q24, largely supported by a 21.7 per cent YoY increase in the eTailer channel, which surged to 29 per cent YoY growth in the final quarter. This strong 4Q24 performance was also due to stockpiling by vendors in anticipation of year-end and Republic Day sales.

Meanwhile, the commercial segment experienced a 5.1 per cent YoY increase in FY2024, with a more significant 11.1 per cent YoY growth in 4Q24. Enterprise and government sectors, particularly through platforms like GeM (Government e-Marketplace), contributed to a 10.6 per cent YoY rise in both areas in 2024.

In terms of company performance, HP Inc. led the market with a 30.1 per cent share in 2024, dominating both the consumer and commercial sectors. Despite a 7.5 per cent YoY decline in its consumer segment, HP’s growth in government and enterprise segments, which increased by 14.7 per cent and 14.3 per cent respectively, helped maintain its top position.

Lenovo secured second place with a 17.2 per cent share, growing by 7 per cent in the consumer segment and 7.4 per cent in the commercial sector. Its enterprise and eTailer-driven shipments contributed to a 7.3 per cent YoY growth.

Dell Technologies ranked third with a 16.1 per cent share, maintaining its second-place position in the commercial segment with a 21 per cent share, supported by enterprise and SMB demand. However, it dropped to fifth in the consumer market, behind Acer, with only a 3.9 per cent YoY growth.

Acer Group took the fourth spot, with a 15.1 per cent market share and the highest growth among the top five vendors, rising by 48.4 per cent YoY in the consumer segment. Acer’s growth was driven by strong eTailer support, aggressive pricing, and substantial discounts, alongside a 16.6 per cent YoY increase in its commercial segment.

Asus held the fifth position with a 7 per cent share, experiencing a 7.8 per cent YoY decline as it focused on maintaining healthy channel inventory. Despite this, it made strides in the commercial market, where it saw an 18.4 per cent YoY growth in 2024.

Looking ahead, Navkendar Singh, associate vice president, Devices Research, IDC India, South Asia & ANZ, noted, “The industry is expecting replacement demand to start coming in from this year, as 2020-21 purchases reach three-four years in age. However, the weakening rupee can lead to an increase in device costs, which can impact the price-sensitive SMB and consumer segments.”

“Despite all the challenges, India PC market is most likely to witness a low single digit growth in the year 2025,” he said.
