Powering ahead for sustainability, India added 27,983MW of green energy in FY25—solar soared 58.5%, wind rose 27.9%, pushing total renewable capacity to 220GW.
India added 27,983MW of renewable energy capacity in FY2025 (April 2024–March 2025), with solar power contributing 23,832MW and wind energy accounting for 4151MW.
According to a report by JMK Research & Analytics, this marks a 58.5% rise in solar installations and a 27.9% jump in wind capacity compared to FY2024.
The country’s total installed renewable energy capacity has now reached 220GW, as per an update by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). Solar leads the sector with 48% of the total, followed by wind (23%), large hydro (22%), bio power (5%), and small hydro (2%).
Meanwhile, utility-scale solar projects added around 16.9GW this year, a 47% year-on-year (YoY) increase. This was driven by the MNRE’s 2023 directive to tender 50GW annually and falling solar module prices.
Rooftop solar also saw substantial growth. About 5148MW was installed, a 72% increase from FY2024. This surge was largely due to the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, which boosted installations in the residential sector.
In the off-grid/distributed solar segment, installations reached 1785MW, nearly three times more than the previous year.

On the other hand, wind capacity rose to 4.15GW, up from 3.25GW last year. Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat accounted for 82% of these additions.

Rajasthan led in large-scale solar additions with 6431MW, followed by Gujarat (3268MW) and Maharashtra (2146MW). Gujarat also topped rooftop installations with 1649MW, ahead of Maharashtra (1227MW) and Kerala (515MW). In off-grid solar, Maharashtra led with 1065MW.
