Alibaba Unveils Proprietary AI Chip and 10-Trillion Parameter Model

Hong Kong-listed shares jump 5% as tech giant details domestic silicon roadmap and targets 20GW cloud capacity.

Alibaba Group’s Hong Kong-listed shares surged 5.1 per cent on Tuesday following a series of major artificial intelligence infrastructure announcements delivered by Chief Executive Eddie Wu at the company’s annual Apsara Conference in Hangzhou.

The Chinese technology giant introduced the Zhenwu V900, a next-generation AI accelerator designed by its semiconductor subsidiary, T-Head. The processor offers three times the performance of its predecessor, the M890, and can be linked in supernode clusters of up to 500,000 cards to train and run frontier AI models. Scheduled for mass production in the first quarter of 2027, the hardware represents a key milestone in China’s push for domestic silicon sovereignty amid ongoing US export controls.

Alongside its hardware roadmap, Alibaba outlined plans to scale its flagship Qwen large language model (LLM) family to between 5 trillion and 10 trillion parameters across upcoming Qwen 4.5 and Qwen 5 releases. This represents up to a fourfold expansion over its current 2.4-trillion-parameter Qwen 3.8 Max model, aiming to support longer-horizon tasks and automated recursive self-improvement with minimal human intervention.

To support accelerating enterprise demand, Alibaba Cloud committed to expanding its global data-centre capacity beyond 20 gigawatts by 2032, with commercial-scale AI supernodes coming online this quarter. Wu noted that while demand for AI compute far outpaces supply capabilities due to persistent supply chain constraints, the deployment of proprietary hardware and cloud infrastructure will help address capacity bottlenecks across global markets.
