The tech giant Apple is considering to ditch Intel or Qualcomm for the processor chipset. The company already designs its own hardware and gets it manufactured from various OEMs that the company has partnered with.
A new report published by Nikkei Asian Review claims that Apple is expanding its manufacturing capabilities to develop proprietary semiconductors. The company wants to reduce the reliance on major suppliers like Intel and Qualcomm. Apple might enter the business of building core processors for notebooks and iPhones however, the company will not outsource these semiconductor components to other manufacturers.

The company made the decision after it faced problems in components sourced by Intel and Qualcomm. Apple has used different modems from Intel and Qualcomm in different versions of iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. On paper modems sourced from both companies look same but, in reality, Qualcomm’s model is more capable than Intel’s. The company found out that, Intel’s modems bring limited capabilities. Qualcomm modems support gigabit LTE technologies like LTE-U, LAA, 4×4 MIMO. In order to ensure the feature parity, Apple had to artificially restrict Qualcomm’s modem. Apple has partnered with Foxconn for manufacturing its own screens, the company is likely to get into manufacturing for chipsets.
Apple is also in a legal battle with Qualcomm, the reliance on chip manufacturer restricts Apple’s legal strategy in the fight. In order to ensure the best technology is delivered to new devices, Apple will get into manufacturing and reduce the reliance on rival corporations.
