Apple is doubling down on on-device artificial intelligence, positioning its graphics processors (GPUs) as a key pillar of its AI strategy as the company seeks to stand apart from rivals that rely heavily on cloud-based computing.
At WWDC 2026, Apple unveiled significant upgrades to its AI platform, introducing more powerful Foundation Models capable of handling text, image, and speech tasks directly on supported devices. The company also expanded developer access to these models through the Foundation Models framework, enabling apps to tap into Apple Intelligence while keeping much of the processing local.
Central to this approach is Apple’s growing focus on GPU acceleration. Rather than depending solely on dedicated neural engines, Apple is increasingly leveraging the parallel processing capabilities of its GPUs to run advanced AI workloads efficiently on iPhones, iPads, and Macs. This strategy aims to deliver faster response times, lower latency, and stronger privacy protections by reducing the need to send user data to external servers.
The company also introduced a more capable on-device AI model for premium hardware, creating a new performance tier for advanced AI features. These models support multimodal capabilities, allowing users and developers to work with images, voice, and text through a unified AI framework.
Apple’s latest AI push reflects a broader effort to make artificial intelligence a core feature across its ecosystem. Enhanced Siri capabilities, visual intelligence tools, AI-powered content creation, and deeper integration across Apple apps are all designed to run seamlessly between on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute when additional computing power is required.
By emphasizing local AI execution powered by its custom silicon, Apple is betting that privacy, efficiency, and tight hardware-software integration will become key competitive advantages in the next phase of the AI race.
