A successful acquisition could accelerate Qualcomm’s expansion into data center AI and other high-growth semiconductor markets.
Qualcomm is reportedly in discussions to acquire AI semiconductor startup Tenstorrent in a deal that could value the company between $8 billion and $10 billion, according to a report by The Information citing a source familiar with the matter.
The negotiations are still underway, and there is no certainty that an agreement will be reached. The final valuation could also change as discussions progress. The report noted that it remains unclear whether the proposed transaction would include performance-based earnout payments, a structure commonly used in acquisitions involving emerging chip companies.
Following the report, Qualcomm shares slipped about 1% in after-hours trading. Neither Qualcomm nor Tenstorrent immediately commented on the reported talks.
The potential acquisition would align with Qualcomm’s broader strategy of expanding beyond its traditional smartphone processor business. The company has been increasing its presence in fast-growing markets such as artificial intelligence, data center computing, and automotive semiconductors to diversify revenue streams.
Founded in 2016, Tenstorrent develops AI accelerators designed for training machine learning models and running advanced AI workloads. The startup is led by Jim Keller, a renowned chip architect known for his work at Apple and for leading Tesla’s autonomous-driving chip development efforts.
If completed, the deal could significantly strengthen Qualcomm’s position in the rapidly evolving AI hardware market, where demand for specialized processors continues to rise as enterprises and technology companies invest heavily in artificial intelligence infrastructure.
