The agreement is based on the companies’ commitment to intellectual property rights and licensing practices
Huawei and Qualcomm have signed a multi-year patent licensing agreement covering cross-licensing of their patent portfolios across 5G, computing, artificial intelligence (AI), networking, and other technology areas.
As part of the agreement, Qualcomm will also acquire certain Huawei patents in the US covering computing, AI, networking, and other technologies. The transaction is subject to the necessary regulatory approvals.
The agreement is based on the companies’ commitment to intellectual property rights and licensing practices consistent with fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) principles.
Huawei Chief Intellectual Property Officer Alan Fan said the company’s long-term investment in fundamental research and development has contributed to advancements in mobile communications and other technology fields. He highlighted Huawei’s contributions to 4G and 5G standards, including polar-code-based signal transmission technology.
Qualcomm Executive Vice President and General Manager of Qualcomm Technology Licensing John Han said the agreement reflects recognition of Qualcomm’s contributions to foundational wireless technologies and its 5G technology leadership.
The agreement also acknowledges Huawei’s continued innovation and intellectual property contributions across 5G and other technology areas, according to Qualcomm.
Once regulatory approvals are received, the transaction will take effect, establishing a broader patent licensing arrangement between the two technology companies across key semiconductor and communications technologies.
