IESA And ELCIA Partner To Propel India’s Sensor Manufacturing Industry

Their partnership, marked by the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for sensor technologies, aims to reduce reliance on imports, foster innovation, and position India as a global leader in the ₹31,000 crore sensor market. 

In a significant development for India’s electronics and semiconductor industries, the India Electronics & Semiconductor Association (IESA) and Electronics City Industries Association (ELCIA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance the country’s capabilities in sensor product development and manufacturing. This strategic partnership aims to position India as a global leader in the electronics system design and manufacturing (ESDM) sector.

At the heart of this collaboration is establishing a Centre of Excellence (ECoE) dedicated to sensor technologies. This initiative addresses the nation’s burgeoning demand for sensor modules, which currently relies on imports for over 90% of its needs. Valued at ₹20,000 crore, the Indian sensor market is projected to grow to ₹31,000 crore by 2027. The ECoE will focus on cutting-edge technologies such as analog and digital sensors, MEMS, NEMS, IR, UV, and laser sensors, with an initial emphasis on industrial applications.

Ashok Chandak, President of IESA, emphasized the partnership’s potential, stating, “Sensors are vital across applications, and this initiative will reduce imports while boosting India’s semiconductor and electronics sectors. It’s a pivotal step toward realizing India’s ambition to be a Product Nation.”

Sriram Kumar V, President of ELCIA, highlighted the collaboration’s transformative potential. “Our goal is to create a robust ecosystem connecting industry and academia to cut dependence on sensor imports. This partnership with IESA marks a key milestone in supporting Indian industry with innovation-driven solutions.”

Dr. V Veerappan, Chairman of IESA, underlined the initiative’s broader vision. “By merging strengths, we aim to drive growth, create jobs, and foster R&D in sensor manufacturing. Our mission is to make India a global hub for sensor innovation.”

This partnership underscores India’s commitment to a self-reliant electronics industry, leveraging innovation and collaboration to cater to domestic and international markets. With ELCIA and IESA’s combined expertise, the nation is set to emerge as a leader in sensor manufacturing, advancing India’s position in the global ESDM landscape.
