India Launches Plan for Indigenous Power Grid Semiconductors

Ministries issue consultation for domestic SiC MOSFET power modules with guaranteed initial order of 13,000 units.

The Indian government has initiated stakeholder consultations to develop indigenous power semiconductors and modules for the national electricity grid, aiming to curb foreign technology reliance across critical power infrastructure.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), in partnership with the Ministry of Power and state-run transmission utility Powergrid, hosted a pre-tender consultation regarding the design, development, qualification, and supply of silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET-based power modules. These advanced semiconductors are designed for Voltage-Sourced Converter High-Voltage Direct Current (VSC-HVDC) transmission systems, which efficiently manage long-distance power distribution.

The initiative aims to build end-to-end domestic capabilities covering chip design, module engineering, fabrication, packaging, assembly, and system integration. To reduce commercialisation risks and accelerate adoption, the government has committed to field-testing the newly developed modules under real-world operating conditions and purchasing an initial batch of approximately 13,000 validated units. Industry feedback is open until 8 October ahead of formal discussions on 14 October.

The push comes as consultancy firm McKinsey warns that without localised production, India’s electrical equipment shortfall could surpass $130 billion, driving import dependence beyond 70 per cent and making electrical hardware one of the nation’s largest import categories alongside crude oil. Domestic consumption of electrical equipment reached $59 billion between 2020 and 2025, but local production met only $32 billion of demand in 2025, causing overall import reliance to climb from 22 per cent to 33 per cent.
