Wednesday, June 18, 2014: Taking inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Gujarat model, more notably Gandhinagar’s rent-a-roof project, real estate developer DLF is all set to instal solar panels on top of its office buildings in Gurgaon, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai. In this way, DLF is set to become the first real estate developer in the country to take such an initiative.
Under the initial pilot project, DLF will install solar panels on top of its commercial buildings. DLF has signed a build-and operate agreement with UK-based Aniron Solatricity and Azure Power India for the project aimed to produce 3 mw of power. The power so generated will be combined with the main power source of the buildings to offer uninterrupted power supply at all times. “It will help us use the unused terrace spaces of our buildings for generating power from environment friendly sources,” Amit Grover, national director-offices business at DLF was quoted as saying by the Economic Times.
Under Gujarat’s rent-a-roof project locals can lease their rooftops to private solar energy companies who pay them a sum of Rs 3 for every unit of energy produced. A similar approach is employed in the case of government buildings like schools and hospitals.
