Nokia Unveils Cognitive Operations Platform

Cognitive Operations integrates edge computing, AI agents, and resilient networking for mining, emergency services, and defence.

Nokia has launched Cognitive Operations (CO), a platform unifying mission-critical communications, accelerated edge computing, and operational AI for industries requiring zero-failure reliability in field conditions.

Designed to enhance asset intelligence across complex environments—from mining operations and emergency vehicle response to military deployments—the platform features AI-agentic assistance, a live 3D digital twin of operations, real-time video analytics, predictive maintenance, and autonomous safety monitoring to bolster operational resilience.

The architecture creates a dynamic hybrid wireless network fabric with no single point of access failure, ensuring continuous connectivity in harsh environments. At the periphery sits Nokia’s Cognitive Edge Node (CEN), an edge compute system featuring embedded graphics processing units (GPUs) to power local processing within field vehicles and remote sites.

The platform is launching with three targeted vertical applications. The flagship mining solution, CO for Mining, provides resilient site communications via the CEN and is available for on-premises deployment or cloud integration through the Microsoft Azure Marketplace.

Tailored for first responders, CO for Emergency Services introduces a “Vehicle as a Node” (VaaN) model where response vehicles equipped with the CEN transform into autonomous intelligence hubs. Police cars, fire engines, and ambulances form self-organising field networks, processing local video analytics and maintaining 3D situational awareness across 5G, Wi-Fi, and satellite links.

Finally, CO for Defence extends the technology to the battlefield edge, converting tactical units into secure nodes in a distributed network. This allows armed forces to share real-time situational data using on-device AI for sensor fusion, video analytics, and threat detection while securing communications across tactical radio, satellite, and 5G in contested arenas.
