Ola Electric and Axis Energy will explore grid-scale battery storage solutions to support India’s growing renewable energy and energy storage requirements.
Ola Electric Mobility has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Axis Energy to evaluate the deployment of up to 20 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) by 2032. The agreement marks the first large-scale commercial partnership for Mahashakti, Ola Electric’s energy storage platform, which is scheduled to launch on August 15.
The collaboration will explore the use of Mahashakti’s battery storage solutions across commercial, industrial and utility-scale renewable energy projects. It also represents Ola Electric’s strategic expansion beyond electric vehicles into the rapidly growing energy storage market.
Axis Energy is developing one of India’s largest portfolios of storage-backed renewable energy projects. The company has secured grid approvals for over 3,750 MW of projects in Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan and has an additional pipeline of nearly 3,500 MW. These include Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE), hybrid and other renewable energy projects that require large-scale battery storage to deliver reliable power.
The partnership comes at a time when India’s demand for battery storage is expected to grow significantly. According to the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the country will require more than 400 GWh of energy storage capacity by 2032 to support renewable energy integration and strengthen grid reliability.
Mahashakti is being developed as a vertically integrated, India-designed and India-manufactured BESS platform. Ola Electric said it combines in-house cell technology, battery manufacturing and system engineering to deliver improved safety, higher performance, greater supply chain resilience and lower total ownership costs.
For Ola Electric, the agreement serves as an early commercial validation of its upcoming energy storage business. If implemented, the partnership could become one of India’s largest battery storage deployments, supporting renewable energy expansion while strengthening the country’s domestic energy storage ecosystem and reducing dependence on imported technologies.
