The AI startup says Nvidia’s latest processor delivers stronger performance for AI agents as the chipmaker expands beyond its GPU business.
AI startup Perplexity plans to deploy Nvidia‘s new Vera central processing unit (CPU), becoming one of the early adopters as the chipmaker expands into the CPU market, according to Reuters.
The step is part of Nvidia‘s strategy to diversify beyond graphics processors and challenge established CPU makers Intel and AMD. Reuters reported that Nvidia expects its Vera CPU business to generate US$20 billion in revenue by the end of the current fiscal year.
Perplexity said the processor is designed to handle the increasing demands of AI agents, which perform complex tasks autonomously. “Vera really stood out to us as just like a dead-on fit for a lot of the core workloads that we have,” Nate Kupp, Perplexity‘s Vice President for Computer Enterprise and Infrastructure, told Reuters.
Kupp added that the Vera CPU completed AI agent coding tasks about 1.5 times faster than conventional CPUs during the company’s testing.
Nvidia is entering a market long dominated by Intel and AMD, but believes AI-driven workloads require a new generation of processors built specifically for autonomous AI applications.
Perplexity did not reveal the number of Vera CPUs it plans to purchase. Reuters noted that OpenAI, Anthropic and Oracle have also announced plans to use Nvidia‘s CPUs, underscoring growing industry interest as AI companies expand computing infrastructure and look for processors optimised for next-generation AI workloads.
