Vimag Labs Secures Fifth India Patent For Magnet-Free Electric Motor Technology

The patent milestone follows the company’s recent USD 5 million Series A funding round led by Accel

Vimag Labs has secured its fifth patent in India for its proprietary magnet-free electric motor technology. With this major upgrade, the company prepares for commercial deployment across the electric mobility and industrial sectors.

The newly granted patent, titled “A Robust Rotating Transformer Excited Synchronous Motor and Its Control,” protects the core architecture of the company’s Virtual Magnet Synchronous Motor (VMSM) platform.

Unlike conventional Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs), which depend on rare-earth magnets embedded in the rotor, VMSM generates and controls its magnetic field in real time using power electronics and proprietary control algorithms. The company said the brushless, slip-ring-free synchronous motor delivers performance comparable to or better than permanent magnet motors while eliminating the need for rare-earth magnets.

With this latest grant, Vimag Labs’ intellectual property portfolio now includes five granted patents, ten patent applications under examination, and fifteen trademarks covering motor architecture, software controls, power electronics, and application-specific technologies.

The company is currently conducting pilot projects with established two-wheeler and passenger vehicle manufacturers and plans to expand the technology to light commercial vehicles, commercial vehicles, and industrial systems with power ratings ranging from 200 kW to 600 kW. It is also developing applications for robotics, defence, and cooling systems.

According to the company, the VMSM platform can help original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) reduce motor costs while lowering dependence on rare-earth magnets, most of which are sourced from China. The technology also aligns with India’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives by supporting domestic development of advanced electric motor technologies.

“This patent is the outcome of over 87,600 engineering hours. It strengthens every dimension of our commercial roadmap—OEM partnerships, licensing, manufacturing scale-up, and future growth,” said Manish Seth, Co-founder and CEO of Vimag Labs.

The patent milestone follows the company’s recent USD 5 million Series A funding round led by Accel, with participation from Chakra Growth Fund and Thinkuvate. Vimag Labs has also signed a manufacturing memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Jendamark Pvt. Ltd. to support large-scale production of its VMSM motors.
