The two chip giants, Samsung and SK Hynix will build four new fabrication plants under an 800 trillion won national semiconductor initiative.
South Korea is making one of its biggest bets yet on the future of artificial intelligence and semiconductor manufacturing. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, the country’s two largest memory chipmakers, have announced plans to each build two massive semiconductor fabrication facilities in the nation’s southwest as part of an ambitious government-backed initiative worth 800 trillion won (about $518 billion).
The project, unveiled on Monday, aims to create a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem that will strengthen South Korea’s position in the rapidly expanding AI-driven chip market. Beyond adding manufacturing capacity, the initiative seeks to bring together chipmakers, equipment suppliers, materials producers, research institutions, and infrastructure developers to establish an integrated production network capable of supporting next-generation semiconductor technologies.
The chip expansion forms part of three new mega-projects jointly introduced by the South Korean government and the country’s leading technology companies. These projects are designed to accelerate economic growth, attract fresh investments, and ensure South Korea remains competitive as global demand for advanced semiconductors continues to surge.
The planned fabrication plants are expected to manufacture cutting-edge chips used in AI servers, high-performance computing systems, data centres, and other advanced technologies. Demand for such chips has risen sharply as companies worldwide invest heavily in artificial intelligence applications, cloud computing, and generative AI models.
South Korea already plays a dominant role in the global memory chip industry through Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. However, intensifying competition from the United States, China, and Taiwan has prompted governments and companies to increase investments in semiconductor production and supply chain resilience.
By committing to one of the world’s largest semiconductor development projects, South Korea aims not only to expand its manufacturing capabilities but also to secure long-term technological leadership in AI and advanced chipmaking. The initiative is expected to create thousands of jobs, encourage innovation, and reinforce the country’s status as a critical player in the global semiconductor industry.
