The 5G base stations of Ericsson and Nokia can now be installed by SK Telecom within the coverage of switchboards of Samsung
South Korean wireless telecommunications operator, SK Telecom, has announced that the company has successfully synced the 5G equipment by its vendors – Swedish multinational networking and telecommunications company Ericsson, South Korean multinational giant Samsung and Finnish multinational company in telecommunications, information technology and consumer electronics Nokia.
SK Telecom, a part of the SK Group, said that the company has synced 5G Non-standalone (NSA) switchboard of Samsung with 5G base station of Ericsson and Nokia. The development comes after a month when SK Telecom announced the three equipment vendors as the preferred bidders of the company.
To set up 5G network more efficiently
The 5G base stations of Ericsson and Nokia can now be installed by SK Telecom within the coverage of switchboards of Samsung. This will allow the company to establish its 5G network more efficiently and flexibly going forward. The company has also made the initial call using the setup, SK Telecom said.
Since last year, the South Korean wireless telecommunications operator has been working to develop interoperability standards and technology in association with American giant AT&T, French telecommunication multinational Orange and other global companies.
Security concerns about Huawei products
SK Telecom has excluded Huawei from its list of 5G equipment vendor, which has allowed the company to move without any hurdles in rolling out the 5G. There is widespread opposition from the public for using Huawei’s products due to the concerns of security and high sentiments for anti-Chinese goods in South Korea.
The company’s competitors, LG Uplus and KT have not yet announced their preferred vendors as there is a fear of backlash from naming Huawei as their bidder.
