After weeks of scrutiny over alleged wastewater contamination, Tata Electronics has secured relief as Tamil Nadu authorities closed their review of its Hosur facility.
The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has ended its scrutiny of Tata Electronics’ Hosur manufacturing facility after the company addressed concerns raised over alleged wastewater contamination affecting nearby agricultural land.
In a statement issued on June 16, 2026, Tata Electronics said the state pollution regulator had confirmed that the company had satisfactorily responded to all queries outlined in an earlier warning notice. According to the company, the board has decided not to pursue any further action on the matter.
The development follows concerns raised by TNPCB after inspections reportedly found that wastewater discharge from the facility may have contaminated open wells located on neighbouring farmland. The regulator had previously warned the company that it could face a forced shutdown if it failed to explain the findings.
The Hosur facility in Tamil Nadu manufactures back panels and other components used in Apple’s iPhone production. Tata Electronics plays a significant role in Apple’s efforts to expand manufacturing operations beyond China and strengthen its supply chain presence in India.
Tata Electronics stated that recent water samples collected from the facility and analysed by the pollution board did not indicate contamination. The company also commissioned an independent assessment through an accredited laboratory. According to Tata, the results showed that all tested parameters were within prescribed limits, and the findings were submitted to the regulator as part of its formal response.
The TNPCB had earlier alleged that wastewater had been discharged into a rainwater harvesting pond within the factory premises, leading to an overflow that affected groundwater in nearby open wells. The investigation was initiated following complaints from local farmers.
The case adds to a series of operational challenges affecting Apple’s Indian supply chain in recent years, including separate fire incidents at iPhone-related manufacturing facilities operated by Tata and former supplier Pegatron.
