Nano SIM cards are now being manufactured in India
The Union Minister for Railways, Communications, and Electronics & Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, recently inaugurated a new Makers Lab at Malaviya National Institute of Technology Jaipur (MNIT), along with three specialised laboratories to strengthen technical education, research, and hands-on learning.
This new facility is a part of the government’s initiative to support India’s rapidly expanding electronics and semiconductor ecosystem.
A major highlight of the visit was the announcement of advanced semiconductor learning facilities at MNIT Jaipur. To provide students with practical exposure to semiconductor fabrication processes, the Minister has also shared plans to develop a dedicated semiconductor simulation system.
The initiative will also offer access to industry-relevant semiconductor design tools, enabling students to gain hands-on experience in chip design and related technologies.
Vaishnaw asked students to actively take part in the design and manufacturing of semiconductor chips in India. He emphasised the vision of India to become a global semiconductor hub.
While highlighting the growth, the Minister also shared that Nano SIM cards are now being manufactured in India, reflecting advancements across the electronics value chain.
During an interactive session, Vaishnaw engaged with students through discussions and a question-and-answer session focused on Nano SIM technology and broader developments in the electronics sector.
Further expanding MNIT’s technology ecosystem, the Minister unveiled plans to set up dedicated Quantum Computing and Artificial Intelligence laboratories at the institute. These facilities are expected to foster research and innovation in emerging technology domains while complementing ongoing semiconductor-focused initiatives.
According to Vaishnaw, similar semiconductor education programmes are currently being implemented in 323 colleges across the country. He encouraged MNIT Jaipur to emerge as a leading institution within this nationwide network and contribute actively to India’s semiconductor mission.
Earlier in the day, the Minister also inaugurated a 20-kW FM transmitter at Ramgarh, Rajasthan, through a programme held at Akashvani premises in Jaipur, attended by senior officials from Prasar Bharati and Akashvani.
