Bridging connectivity gaps, Vi and AST SpaceMobile team up to bring direct satellite broadband to smartphones, targeting India’s remotest areas with 4G and 5G coverage.
Vodafone Idea (Vi) has joined forces with US-based satellite company AST SpaceMobile to introduce satellite-enabled mobile broadband services directly to smartphones across India.
This partnership aims to enhance connectivity in regions where traditional mobile networks struggle to establish coverage. By combining Vi’s terrestrial telecom infrastructure with AST SpaceMobile’s low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite technology, the initiative targets remote and underserved areas.
Under the agreement, Vi will manage network integration, spectrum allocation, and regulatory processes, while AST SpaceMobile will build and operate the satellite network essential to the service.
The project promises to bring 4G and 5G coverage to difficult terrains, where building mobile towers is challenging. It is expected to enhance critical sectors, including remote education, healthcare, farming, and disaster relief efforts.
According to a report by The Economic Times, industry experts say this collaboration could mark a significant advancement in bridging India’s connectivity gaps, providing users with seamless mobile access regardless of location.
AST SpaceMobile is developing the world’s first space-based cellular broadband system that standard mobile phones can access without additional equipment. The company recently demonstrated the ability to make voice and video calls from orbit using regular smartphones.
Although the announcement marks a positive step forward, Vodafone Idea’s shares fell marginally by 0.61% on Wednesday, closing at ₹6.56.
