Tata Electronics Announces Workforce Expansion In Hosur iPhone Assembly Plant

Shooting up to 40,000, the workforce is increasing in Tata’s ₹60 billion iPhone assembly plant in Hosur.  At the same time as announcing this massive regional employment boost in Tamil Nadu, a fire broke out at the same plant. But all are safe.  

Tata Electronics plans to hire over 20,000 workers for its new iPhone assembly plant in Hosur, which will increase the total workforce at the facility to 40,000. On Saturday, N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, announced this at the ceremony for Tata Motors and JLR’s ₹90 billion manufacturing unit in Panapakkam, Tamil Nadu.

Tata Electronics is preparing to begin production at its new iPhone assembly plant in Koothanapalli after acquiring Wistron’s unit. The company is investing approximately ₹60 billion in the assembly plant and a similar amount in the component factory supplying Apple.

Together, these facilities are expected to create over 50,000 jobs, primarily for women. The assembly plant alone is set to add 35,000-40,000 workers, making it one of Apple’s largest in India, behind only Foxconn’s Tamil Nadu site.

On the same day, a fire broke out at Tata Electronics’ manufacturing facility near Hosur, where over 1,500 workers were present. The company confirmed that all employees are safe, and the cause of the fire is under investigation. Three workers who exhibited respiratory issues and were hospitalised, are stable now.

Tata already employs over 150,000 people in Tamil Nadu across various subsidiaries, including TCS, Titan, and Tata Power. Chandrasekaran highlighted that the Hosur factory, which has been operational for three years, currently employs 20,000 people, more than 15,000 of whom are women. He expects the workforce to double within a year.

Moreover, the new facility, equipped with advanced technology, will produce vehicles through a collaboration between Tata Motors and JLR. Once fully operational, it is set to create 5,000 direct jobs and help develop a broader regional ecosystem.

In the past three years, the Tata Group has made significant investments in major manufacturing projects in Tamil Nadu, including Tata Power, Tata Electronics, and Tata Motors, as well as ₹22 billion in industrial training institutes to enhance skills among the youth.
