Dr. S Jaishankar Announces India-Japan Semiconductor Partnerships

The minister underscored the strategic importance of the emerging semiconductor collaboration among India, Japan, and Taiwan.

At the 2nd India-Japan Forum in July 2023, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar highlighted the significant potential for collaboration between India and Japan in emerging and critical technologies, particularly semiconductors. He identified this sector as a forthcoming “fourth revolution,” emphasizing its capacity to transform manufacturing, urbanization, and logistics in India.

In the same month, India and Japan signed a memorandum of understanding to develop the semiconductor industry, aiming to establish resilient and reliable supply chains. This agreement is part of Japan’s broader commitment to invest approximately $35.9 billion in India by 2027. These initiatives underscore a shared commitment to deepening bilateral ties and advancing technological cooperation, with the semiconductor sector poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of India-Japan relations.

The minister also underscored the strategic importance of the emerging semiconductor collaboration among India, Japan, and Taiwan. He expressed optimism about its growing significance for both nations, highlighting that this collaboration is poised to be among the top five priority areas for India and Japan. He stressed its potential to reshape global geopolitical dynamics and serve as a critical factor in balancing global power equations over the coming decade.

Jaishankar highlighted the increasing enthusiasm among stakeholders in both nations to deepen their ties and address historical challenges in their bilateral relationship. He emphasized the surge in discussions, innovative initiatives, and collaborative industry efforts focused on enhancing training and language proficiency. Furthermore, he elaborated on reforms in higher education that promote student exchanges and establish joint campuses, reflecting a revitalized commitment to advancing India-Japan relations.
