Integrals Power’s LMFP material contains 80% manganese
UK-based battery technology company Integrals Power has recently announced that it will develop and supply hundreds of kilograms of its patented manganese-rich Lithium Manganese Iron Phosphate (LMFP) cathode active material for a new UK government-funded programme. This programme is aimed at developing advanced battery technologies for the defence and automotive sectors.
The duration of this project is about 30 months, which has a value of £2 million. It is being handled by specialist battery supplier Denchi and will focus on producing demonstrator battery cells in pouch and cylindrical formats, including 21700 and 4695 cell sizes. The cells will be manufactured at the UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC) in Coventry using its new Flexible Pilot Line, before being assembled into battery packs at Denchi’s facility in Thurso, Scotland.
Funding for the programme has been secured through the Battery Innovation Programme, delivered by Innovate UK and supported by the Department for Business and Trade under the UK government’s Industrial Strategy, which seeks to strengthen the country’s globally competitive battery manufacturing capability.
Integrals Power said its LMFP chemistry is designed to provide a balance of higher energy density, safety, durability, and lower cost, making it suitable for applications ranging from military systems to electric vehicles. The company highlighted that the material can be produced from raw materials sourced in Europe and North America and does not rely on critical minerals such as cobalt and nickel.
“Our involvement in this programme reflects the growing recognition that LMFP will transform battery performance, cost, and supply chain resilience,” said Behnam Hormozi, Founder and CEO of Integrals Power. “By eliminating reliance on critical minerals such as cobalt and nickel while delivering higher energy density than LFP, LMFP is well suited to the evolving requirements of both defence and automotive applications.”
The first validation trials will use Denchi’s BB-2590 military battery pack, currently based on Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) cells. The new LMFP cells will be integrated into ruggedised, waterproof packs designed for radios, sensor systems, unmanned aerial and ground platforms, and backup power for aircraft and marine systems.
Denchi CEO Andrew Cowie said the project is intended to demonstrate a sovereign UK battery capability from materials through to finished battery packs. “By working in partnership with Integrals Power, UKBIC, and the UK government, we are helping deliver an end-to-end UK solution for advanced battery systems,” he said.
This project comes when there are huge concerns about global battery supply chain dependence on China, which currently dominates production of LFP cells, materials, and manufacturing technology. Industry stakeholders are increasingly seeking alternative supply chains that are more resilient and less exposed to geopolitical risks.
Sean Gilgunn, Managing Director, UKBIC, while highlighting the project mentioned that the project showcases the value of partnership all over the UK battery ecosystem. The Flexible Pilot Line is designed to help companies scale up new battery technologies more quickly and cost-effectively.
Integrals Power’s LMFP material contains 80% manganese, which the company claims enables up to 20% higher energy density than conventional LFP while maintaining the chemistry’s advantages in safety, cycle life, and affordability. The company believes this combination could make LMFP a compelling alternative for both defence and next-generation electric vehicle applications.
