Japan’s Fujitsu-owned 1Finity is expanding its India networking business with more than 200 engineers as AI and data-centre growth drives demand for optical networking hardware, with local manufacturing a potential next step.
1Finity plans to expand its India networking business, allocating more than 200 engineers to a dedicated team as AI workloads, hyperscale cloud infrastructure and data-centre growth drive demand for high-capacity optical networking equipment.
The company plans to strengthen its sales presence and expand its workforce as it pursues opportunities in India’s telecommunications infrastructure market. Its portfolio includes dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) line systems and optical transponders, which carry large volumes of data over optical fibre.
“We have resources like R&D resources here in India. So, why not? It’s a very good opportunity for us to grow more,” said Masaaki Moribayashi, Global CEO, 1Finity, in an interview with Moneycontrol.
The company is also considering local manufacturing if demand reaches sufficient scale. However, it has not committed to an investment or decided whether to establish its own factory or work with a manufacturing partner. Its existing manufacturing facilities are in Japan.
1Finity is also exploring longer-term opportunities in 5G-Advanced, 6G, Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) and AI-enabled radio access networks (AI-RAN). It has developed AI-RAN technology using Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs), but has yet to see clear demand for GPU-based deployments.
The company expects AI adoption to increase demand for network capacity, reliability and low latency, creating further opportunities for optical networking hardware. Its mobile networking expansion in India may take longer, as most telecom operators have already selected equipment partners for their existing 5G deployments.
