The collaboration will focus on AI research, sovereign AI infrastructure, high-performance computing and skills development in the UK.
AMD and Imperial College London have announced a strategic collaboration to advance AI-enabled scientific research, sovereign AI infrastructure and next-generation high-performance computing (HPC) systems in the United Kingdom.
According to AMD, the partnership will combine the company’s expertise in accelerated computing and open software with Imperial’s research capabilities across science, engineering and healthcare. The two organisations will work on research projects covering engineering design, multiphysics simulation, materials discovery, climate and earth system modelling, neuroscience, brain imaging, genomics and computational biology.
Researchers will also explore ways to optimize AI models, scientific workflows and other compute-intensive applications using AMD compute platforms and ROCm open software.
“This collaboration between AMD and Imperial combines world-class computing and AI expertise with leading engineering and scientific research,” said UK Science Minister Lord Vallance.
AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su said the partnership would help accelerate scientific discovery through advanced computing technologies while supporting the development of future AI talent.
Beyond research, AMD and Imperial plan to collaborate on education, workforce development, semiconductor technologies and engineering initiatives. Students, researchers, startups and innovators will get access to computing resources, software environments and technical expertise through workshops, seminars, internships, pilot programmes and industry engagement activities.
Imperial College London President Hugh Brady said the collaboration would create new opportunities for researchers, students and entrepreneurs to access advanced AI and computing infrastructure.
The organisations said the partnership is intended to support and aid scientific research and strengthen computing and AI capabilities in the UK.
