As India’s brightest minds rise, the second Aspire Scholarship releases, empowering 36 engineering students from underprivileged backgrounds with full financial support.
The second edition of the Aspire Scholarship, launched by Ajai Chowdhry and Swayam Charitable Trust, has been unveiled to support deserving engineering students. Building on the success of its inaugural year, the scholarship aims to aid students facing financial challenges in pursuing higher education.
The scholarship was open to students from prominent engineering institutions, including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in Kharagpur, Hyderabad, Patna, Delhi, Bombay, and Goa, as well as other universities in Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.
The Aspire Scholarship’s 2024-25 edition saw a double rise in participation. A total of 2296 applications were received from students across 26 states and 11 prestigious institutes. Of them, 36 students were selected, which recorded a 25% increase in shortlisted candidates.
The financial support extends beyond tuition fees, covering hostel and mess fees for the selected scholars throughout their academic journey.
Since its announcement in July 2023, the initiative has exceeded expectations, granting scholarships to 64 students, surpassing the initial target of 28 scholars annually.
Regarding the initiative as a “beacon of optimism”, Dr Ajai Chowdhry, Chairman EPIC Foundation, and MGB, National Quantum Mission of India and Founder Trustee of Swayam Charitable Trust said, “It brings me immense pleasure to observe how some of the students from the smallest of cities leveraged their passion to secure the scholarship this year. Our country needs more engineers to support the growing economy.”
Mr. Kunal Chowdhry, Trustee of Swayam Charitable Trust, further highlighted, “The majority of this year’s finalists (almost 80%) came from lower-income areas of India, with 74% having annual family income of less than 1 lakh (Rs 100,000) and 40% dependent on farming for a living. The data itself demonstrates a paradigm shift in thinking.”
In addition to the Aspire Scholarship, Swayam Charitable Trust also manages other philanthropic initiatives, including a $250,000 fund set up by Kunal Chowdhry in 2019 to support Indian MBA students at Harvard Business School.
