Assam seeks deeper Japan partnership in semiconductors and clean energy

Following the India-Japan Summit, Assam is looking to strengthen collaboration with Japan in semiconductors, clean energy, technology and skill development to attract more investment.

Assam is stepping up efforts to deepen its partnership with Japan, with a brand new focus on semiconductors, clean energy and technology-led collaboration following the recent India-Japan Summit.

According to The Economic Times, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met Japan’s Ambassador to India, Ono Keiichi, in New Delhi to discuss expanding cooperation under the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. The discussions covered semiconductor research, clean energy, Japanese language training and other emerging areas of collaboration.

In a post on X, Sarma said the meeting included a “productive exchange” on opportunities arising from the India-Japan Summit and reaffirmed Assam’s commitment to contributing to the growing strategic partnership between the two countries.

“I am grateful to H.E. Mr. Ono Keiichi, Ambassador of Japan to India, for hosting me at his residence in New Delhi for Cha-no-yu, the traditional Japanese tea ceremony,” Sarma said.

The Economic Times reported that the state government is actively pursuing Japanese investments and technical partnerships, particularly in high-technology manufacturing, renewable energy, infrastructure and human resource development.

The outreach comes as Assam looks to position itself as a destination for global manufacturing and advanced technology investments. By improving ties with Japan in sectors such as semiconductors and clean energy, the state aims to attract fresh investments, build technical capabilities and create new opportunities for industrial growth and skilled employment.
