Joining hands to boost homegrown semiconductor solutions, Bharat Electronics and Tata Electronics aim to reduce reliance on imported critical technologies.
Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Tata Electronics signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) last week to jointly develop indigenous semiconductor and electronics solutions.
The MoU was signed on Thursday at Bombay House, the Tata Group’s headquarters in Mumbai. Manoj Jain, Chairman and Managing Director of BEL, and Dr Randhir Thakur, CEO and MD of Tata Electronics, formalised the agreement.
This collaboration will focus on the development of critical semiconductor technologies. Both companies plan to explore joint opportunities in semiconductor fabrication (Fab), outsourced semiconductor assembly and testing (OSAT), and design services.
These areas are key to meeting BEL’s present and future requirements for components such as microcontrollers (MCUs), systems-on-chip (SoCs), monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs), and other processors.
The partnership also aims to improve BEL’s manufacturing capabilities by leveraging Tata Electronics’ expertise and resources. The two firms will share technical knowledge, adopt best practices, and work towards optimising production processes.
BEL stated that the agreement marks a significant step in strengthening India’s domestic semiconductor ecosystem. It aligns with the broader national objective of reducing dependence on imported technologies and boosting local capabilities in advanced manufacturing.
Tata Electronics is actively contributing to the development of a self-sustaining electronics ecosystem. Its involvement spans chip design, fabrication, and system integration.
BEL, under the Ministry of Defence, has a six-decade legacy in designing and producing sophisticated electronics systems for strategic and civilian use.
