New training program aims to build students’ skills in satellite communications and prepare them for future telecom technologies.
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Viasat India have launched their first training program on Satellite and Applications of Satellite Technology. The program is being conducted under the proposed Telecom Innovation, Research and Training Center (TIRTC) at Bharat Ratna Bhim Rao Ambedkar Institute of Telecom Training (BRBRAITT) in Jabalpur.
BSNL and Viasat India had announced their partnership last year to promote skill development and prepare professionals for careers in satellite communications and related technologies.
As part of this collaboration, the first course will be a 22-hour virtual training program designed for students and early-career professionals. The sessions will be conducted online by an expert trainer. The program is expected to benefit college students, IT and engineering professionals, and fresh graduates who want to learn the basics of satellite communication and its applications.
Commenting on the launch, Robert J Ravi, Chairman and Managing Director of BSNL, said the company is pleased to begin this first course with Viasat India. He added that the initiative supports BSNL’s goal of encouraging innovation and building local capabilities. He also highlighted the growing role of BRBRAITT in training young professionals with future-ready skills and said more courses and facilities may be introduced in the future.
Ben Palmer, President – Commercial at Viasat, said that building a strong talent pipeline in satellite technologies is important as India moves forward with digital and emerging technologies. He explained that the course aims to provide students and professionals with easy access to high-quality learning on satellite fundamentals. In the future, the program may expand to include both virtual and classroom training, and the company also plans to establish a Center of Excellence where students can gain practical experience with live equipment demonstrations.
Dr Manish Shukla, CGM of BRBRAITT, said the program has been launched under the prestigious TIRTC (Telecom Innovation, Research Training Centre) initiative. He added that the program reflects BRBRAITT’s commitment to strengthening collaboration between industry and academia in advanced technologies. Conducted in partnership with the Department of Telecommunications and Viasat, the training will provide students with knowledge of satellite fundamentals, communication link design, advanced satellite systems, ground operations, and real-world applications.
He said the main objective of the program is to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry needs, while helping students develop practical skills and global perspectives in the fast-growing satellite communication sector.
