Delhi Extends EV Policy Till 2026, Plans Public Consultation

As Delhi’s EV push gains momentum, the government hits pause to consult the public and fine-tune its following green mobility blueprint.

The Delhi government has decided to extend its existing electric vehicle (EV) policy until March 2026, or until a revised version is formally introduced. The move was approved on Tuesday during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at the Delhi Secretariat.

This extension ensures that there is no regulatory gap as the city works on drafting a more comprehensive EV policy. Officials said the new version will be opened for public consultation, a process expected to take several months due to its complexity.

Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh highlighted the need for a more inclusive approach to shaping the next phase of Delhi’s EV journey. According to him, a wide range of inputs from residents, environmental organisations, technical experts, and industry representatives will help shape a policy that better addresses on-ground challenges.

Since its launch in 2020, the current policy has significantly boosted EV registrations; particularly among two-wheelers and e-rickshaws. However, issues such as inadequate public charging points and unclear procedures for handling used EV batteries still persist. The policy has already seen multiple extensions under successive governments, with the latest one expiring on 15 July.

Officials say the revised policy will likely address these shortcomings by focusing on improving charging infrastructure, evaluating the current subsidy structure, and introducing clearer guidelines for managing battery waste. It will also aim to clarify the roles of both government and private players in the city’s evolving EV ecosystem.

As per reports, transport department sources explained that the extension gives them time to refine the policy without disrupting the existing framework. They added that the revised version will aim to align more closely with Delhi’s environmental targets and sustainable mobility goals.

The government has yet to announce when the draft of the new policy will be released for public feedback.
