Expanding beyond Taiwan, Foxconn signs up with Mexico government to build a smart city in Sonora, highlighting electric transportation and battery manufacturing.
Contract manufacturer Foxconn has recently inked an agreement with the State of Sonora in Mexico to collaborate on smart city initiatives.
This memorandum of understanding (MoU) marks the first time Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn) is extending its advanced platform service beyond Taiwan, where it has been working on smart city innovations with Kaohsiung, the country’s largest port city.
The partnership between Foxconn and the Sonora State Government focuses on improving transportation, public security, and port management. The aim is to enhance digital experiences for residents, businesses, and local governments, thereby advancing governance and public services.
Foxconn also aims to explore opportunities in electric vehicles, buses, and batteries, further advancing the region’s technological capabilities.
Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño expressed the state’s ambition to lead Mexico’s electric transportation revolution and harness artificial intelligence to improve daily life.
He highlighted the potential for cooperation with Foxconn in the electric vehicle sector, particularly regarding electric buses, batteries, and other related technologies.
Foxconn Chairman Young Liu underscored the importance of digitalisation and AI for smart city development, which enables cities to provide more efficient services. He emphasised that Foxconn’s unique ‘Build-Operate-Localise’ business model, combining technological expertise, AI, and global reach, supports collaboration across regions.
Liu expressed excitement at expanding Foxconn’s smart city platform to Sonora, using the experience gained from Kaohsiung’s smart city transformation.
